Wrap-up and resources
Key Takeaways: The Thread Connecting the Whole Track
- Computational thinking first, syntax second: from Scratch to C, the same four pillars (decomposition, patterns, abstraction, algorithms) solve every problem, only the form of expressing them changes.
- Pointers are the pivot: once you understand "a pointer as an address" in the pointers part, everything after it (dynamic memory, linked lists, trees, hash tables) is a repeated application of that one idea.
- Measure before judging: from performance labs to Big O, the whole track teaches you not to trust your gut feeling about performance or correctness, measure, test with Valgrind and GDB, and compare with numbers.
- Manual responsibility for resources: Git manually tracks your code's history, and C manually manages its memory (malloc/free), both teach discipline that higher-level tools hide from you.
- The computer reads a byte by context: A number, a letter and an instruction can be the same byte; meaning comes from use.
- The shell expands before it executes: Wildcards and variables are expanded in the shell and the command receives only the result.
- Memory has a map: Stack, heap, text and data: knowing where everything lives explains most bugs.
- Every block has one owner: Free it once, null the pointer, and never return a pointer to a local.
- Shape governs performance: List or array, balanced or degenerate, n log n or n²: structure sets the growth.
From here on
Every concept in this guide will reappear in more complex form in later sections (Core Engineering, Algorithms, and others), the goal was never memorizing details, but building intuition that lets you recognize these patterns wherever they appear later.
Glossary
| Term | Definition | Part |
|---|---|---|
| Kernel | The central part of the operating system that directly manages memory, CPU, and files. | 1 |
| Docker Image / Container | A fixed template for an app and its dependencies (Image) versus an actually-running instance of it (Container). | 1 |
| Compiler / Linker | The compiler translates source code into assembly; the linker combines object files into one executable. | 2 |
| Benchmarking | Measuring code performance (time, memory, energy) with real numbers instead of impressions. | 3 |
| Dereference | Accessing the value stored at the address a pointer points to, via *ptr. | 4 |
| Null Terminator | A zero-value character ending every string in C, telling functions where to stop reading. | 4 |
| Stack / Heap | Stack: automatically-managed local memory. Heap: dynamic memory manually managed with malloc/free. | 5 |
| Memory Leak | Forgetting to free reserved memory that's no longer used. | 5 |
| Dangling Pointer | A pointer used after the memory it pointed to has been freed. | 5 |
| Breakpoint | A specific point where GDB stops program execution to inspect its state. | 6 |
| Collision | Two different keys landing on the same index in a hash table. | 7 |
| Binary Search Tree (BST) | An ordered binary tree: everything left is smaller than the node, everything right is larger. | 7 |
| Big O Notation | A mathematical description of how execution time or memory grows with input size. | 8 |
| Stable Sort | A sorting algorithm that preserves the original relative order of equal-valued elements. | 8 |
| Von Neumann architecture | An architecture storing program and data together in memory. | 1 |
| Program Counter | A register holding the address of the next instruction. | 1 |
| inode | A disk structure carrying a file’s data and permissions; names point to it. | 1 |
| Wildcard | A character such as * or ? that the shell expands into matching file names. | 1 |
| Layer | An immutable piece of a container image’s file system. | 1 |
| Prototype | A function declaration describing its name and types without its body. | 2 |
| Scope | The region where a variable is visible. | 2 |
| Wall time | The total elapsed time including waiting. | 3 |
| Pointer arithmetic | Adding a number to a pointer jumps by number × type size. | 4 |
| Stack / Heap | Two regions of process memory: the first for automatic local variables, the second for what you reserve with malloc. | 4 |
| Function pointer | A variable holding the start address of a function. | 5 |
| Use-after-free | Using a pointer to a block that was already freed. | 6 |
| Segmentation fault | The kernel ending a process for accessing a forbidden address. | 6 |
| Load factor | The number of items divided by the number of hash-table buckets. | 7 |
| Traversal | Visiting every node of a tree once in a defined order. | 7 |
| Stable sort | A sort preserving the original order of equal items. | 8 |
